In 1803, Simon Willard received a patent for his new Time Piece. Over time, case variants evolved and after the patent expired other makers began producing them. As competition from Connecticut Shelf clocks increased case style and reverse painted glasses became simpler to reduce the cost. Production continued into 1880s.
Reproductions began in the early 20th century and continue today.
Bio: Andy Dervan is a longtime NAWCC member and a respected horological researcher, author, and presenter. He has published numerous articles on clock and watch history and regularly lectures for NAWCC chapters and events.
